 School District #5 was one room school house that stood in the little community of Barkertown, in the south eastern part of the town of Nunda. Like all rural districts, the school kept a record book with minutes of meetings, students, and other required information. The book for #5 fell into the hands of Lillie Barker, the daughter of Munson O and Adeline Rawson Barker. Munson was the son of Seth Barker, who settled the area of Barkertown and gave it his name.

The book became little Lillie's scrapbook, and a good share of the book has clippings from newspapers pasted on it. Fortunately however, perhaps a third of the pages were left uncovered. Those pages offer insight into the one room school house from 1853 to 1861. Perhaps most interesting are the names and attendance of the students.

We have reproduced part of the book below. This section lists the students who attended school between May and September of 1854 and provides the parent or guardian of the student. It is the only list in the record book that has the adult's names.

The surnames that appear below are: Paine, Prescott, Miller, Sabins, Burdick, Crandall, Burdick, Allen, Micholes, Irish, King, McKay, Barker, Morrison, Baker, Kingman (Wingman?) Shute, Town, Smith Atwood, DeMocker, Reynolds, Tiffany, Bush.
