Spent two years (ages 13-15) at Nunda Academy. At sixteen she takes over the duties of the household after mother sent off to Michigan to convalesce. Jessie was attended the Nunda Seminary, then to Lima’s Genesee Wesleyan Seminary where she earned top grades. After rejecting teaching, she began writing free-lance literary reviews. Then she was hired as one of the first woman reporters by the forerunner of today’s Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Susan B. Anthony gave her stamp of approval to Jessie. Journalism was an exciting career for a young woman of 1890. Then she was off to Boston and New York City, the literary centers of America. Edward Arlington Robinson, Amy Lowell, and Vachel Lindsay were famous associates and friends. Her “Little Book of Modern Verse” in 1913 became an American best seller. She was awarded the Poetry Society of America’s highest award. Rittenhouse family members are buried around the Tuscarora stone, several family members still live in our area. Rittenhouse, John E., of Tuscarora. Jesse Bell Rittenhouse’s father. A widowed sister kept house for the John E. Rittenhouse’s parents at the top of Creveling Hill? John E. Rittenhouse contracted typhoid fever while working in mines in Arizona. Jesse states in her autobiography that her father’s people were descended from William Rittenhouse who came to Philadelphia from Germany in 1688 and became quite prosperous in the New World. However, communication with the Rittenhouse family genealogical web site fails to support this. They simply say that they have no record of a Rittenhouse connection in the town of Mt Morris. He may be a distant relation or no relation at all or the Rittenhouse genealogy site just does not have the information.

She was fond of music, and as mother’s old rosewood melodeon, on which she had played as a girl, stood in the parlor of the farmhouse, Mary began to pick up pieces by ear and was soon playing well enough for us all to sing the popular airs of the day. Sweeting, Henry Jan. 3, 1861 FOUND DEAD We learn from the Mt. Morris Union that a man named Henry SWEETING, four of whose sons live in Rochester, was found dead in the woods near Union Corners last Thursday, Dec. 27th. He went out the day previous, to chop wood for H. G. Chamberlain, Esq., and his failure to return at night excited no alarm, as his own family supposed him to be staying at Mr. Chamberlain's and the latter thought he was at home. His residence was at Tuscarora. - Mr. SWEETING was sixty-five or seventy years of age, and a sober, industrious man. His decease is attributed to paralysis, or an affection of the heart.
